The Manufacture of Cherbourg’s umbrellas and its Museum
VISIT THE CHERBOURG UMBRELLA FACTORY
The city of Cherbourg stands at the tip of the Cotentin, at the end of a Normandy beaten back by the English Channel and a historically rainy and windy climate. With their strong character the Normans created the famous Cherbourg Umbrellas, true and timeless historical pieces and fashion accessories.
The city was a city of romance amid the gloom in the iconic film “Les parapluies de Cherbourg”. But it regained its full colors when the photographer Jean-Pierre Yvon decided to create the brand “Le Parapluie de Cherbourg”, an authentic handmade umbrella.
Since then, the Manufacture has opened its doors to let you discover the trade secrets of this luxury Norman product. In an exceptional location with a view of the port, the “Qualité Tourisme” labelled tour invites you to visit the private areas to see digitalized transcriptions of the manufacture of Cherbourg’s famous umbrellas. Discover all the stages of umbrella manufacture, re-explore the history of the brand through a projected film and visit the alleys of the Museum of the Factory offering a complete retrospective of the brand and the product.
