OUR PROFESSIONAL OPINION

Why we recommend Le Quai des Mers

Some addresses become part of a city’s identity — Le Quai des Mers is one of them. Located in the heart of Cherbourg’s Transatlantic Maritime Station, in close partnership with La Cité de la Mer, this restaurant offers one of the most spectacular views in the Cotentin: the harbour of Cherbourg, the constant comings and goings of ferries, trawlers and sailing boats, with the nuclear submarine Le Redoutable as a backdrop. A setting very few restaurants in France can claim.

What we particularly appreciate about Le Quai des Mers:

A truly unique location – Nestled within the iconic Transatlantic Maritime Station, the light-filled dining room looks directly out over the port. The large panoramic bay window transforms every meal into a visual experience. In season, the terrace extends this privilege into the sea-salted open air.

Generous cuisine, rooted in local tradition – Chef Philippe GODOT regularly refreshes a menu that showcases the best of Normandy’s seafood: oysters from Saint-Vaast from the Hélie house, Channel scallops, and the catch of the day. Local specialities abound: Royal Seafood Choucroute, Norman Cheesecake with Calvados Caramel, mussels with Camembert… The open kitchen invites diners behind the scenes.

Exceptional event capacity for the Manche département – 170 covers, full private hire available for all audiences (individuals, businesses, associations, works councils), plus an off-site catering service: Le Quai des Mers is one of the few venues in the Cotentin capable of hosting large-scale events at this level of setting and service.

A word from a Cotentin Tourisme member:

“When my clients want an address that truly combines the maritime Cotentin with a great meal, I send them to Le Quai des Mers. The effect the dining room has on visitors discovering the harbour for the first time is simply irresistible.” — Denis, Cotentin Tourisme team, Cherbourg

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about Le Quai des Mers

Q1: Do I need to visit La Cité de la Mer to have lunch at Le Quai des Mers? No — the restaurant is accessible without an entry ticket for La Cité de la Mer. Simply head to the reception of the Transatlantic Maritime Station. Lunch at Le Quai des Mers is open to everyone, whether or not you are visiting La Cité de la Mer that day. That said, combining the two makes for a wonderful full day out: visit the submarine Le Redoutable in the morning, followed by a panoramic harbour lunch.

Q2: Is the restaurant suitable for group meals and school trips? Yes — Le Quai des Mers regularly welcomes all kinds of groups: tourist parties, school groups, clubs, associations and works councils. With 170 covers, it can accommodate large groups without compromising service quality. Specially designed group menus (Les Abysses, Titanic, Archimède) are available at accessible prices, drinks included. Minimum 20 people at lunch and 30 in the evening.

Q3: Can the restaurant be hired exclusively for a private event? Yes — full private hire is available for private events (birthdays, weddings, communions, family gatherings) as well as professional ones (corporate dinners, seminars, incentives). The view over Cherbourg harbour at night, bathed in light, creates a truly memorable backdrop for evening events. The team will support you from start to finish. Q5: Is the terrace open all year round? The terrace opens from the first fine days of the season. Outside summer, availability depends on weather conditions. The indoor dining room, with its large panoramic bay window overlooking the harbour, offers that same view in all seasons and all weathers — often even more dramatic in winter under moody Norman skies.
